Visual restoration for retinal dystrophies using optogenetics: translational research

Opto4EYE aims to restore vision in humans with retinal degeneration using CatCh for improved light-evoked responses. Furthermore we plan to develop new non-viral vectors to deliver these optogenetic tools and assess its safety and efficacy in 3 different animal models. In this framework, it should be taken into account that non-viral vectors offer many important advantages for clinical use: they are less limited by the size of the gene to transfect; they do not raise safety concerns; they are easier and less expensive to produce; and they are classified by the regulatory authorities as drugs, rather than as biological products, which will favour us when the time comes to submit an application for a phase I clinical trial in human patients.
