EYE-RISK members present their incredible challenge in Barcelona
Marius Ueffing and Caroline Klaver, the Coordinator y Scientific Co-Coordinator of the European project EYE-RISK, have explained the state of progress of the programme and the prospects offered by the results of this research for the future treatment of the atrophic form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This took place at CaixaForum Barcelona during the debate Fighting Blindness. Future Challenges and Opportunities for Visual Restoration in early September.

Dr Klaver, the Professor of Epidemiology and the Genetics of Eye Diseases at the Erasmus Medical Center (Rotterdam, Netherlands), said that genetic studies have not only enabled researchers to understand the underlying pathogenic mechanisms in AMD but have also contributed therapeutic aims to prevent the disease in the future.
Meanwhile, Dr Ueffing, the Director of the Institute for Ophthalmic Research at the University of Tuebingen Medical Center (Germany), said that superimposing the phenotypes of AMD with the biological mechanisms and the etiologies of the pathology adds potential when defining the directions for the research, advances the understanding of pathomechanisms and helps researchers to specify target candidates for future therapies.

The EYE-RISK European project also occupied an important place among the posters presented. Specifically, in the presentation of results of the study to characterise phenotypes in geographic atrophy using cluster analysis. This research established three phenotypes in geographic atrophy that displayed diverse rates of growth. The result is useful for the prognosis of patients and to optimise their eligibility for future clinical trials.
EYE-RISK is funded by the European Union’s research and innovation programme Horizon 2020 under Grant Agreement 634479.
