Tobacco can leave you in the dark

Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 chemical substances that, apart from everything else, can leave you in the dark. World No Tobacco Day takes place on 31 May with the aim of highlighting the importance of living without the habit.

Tobacco is the leading cause of avoidable death in the European Union (EU), being responsible for almost 700,000 deaths annually. One of every four deaths caused by cancer in the EU comes from smoking which, in turn, is responsible for 85% of the deaths through lung cancer throughout the EU. But this is not all. Smoking can leave us in the dark. This includes smokers, their family and, ultimately, anyone who breathes tobacco smoke.

Tobacco is extremely harmful for health but in the case of eyesight it becomes more relevant due to the fact that it can leave us in the dark. The components and smoke of tobacco increase the chances of suffering from eye diseases like age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, strabismus, retinopathy or cataracts.

At the Foundation we want to join the World Health Organization (WHO) to stop illicit trade of tobacco products. You can know more about the campaign through this link.
