Dr. Jayakrishna Ambati receives the prestigious the 2018 RPB David F. Weeks Award for Outstanding AMD Research

Member of BMF Scientist Council, his research focused on the age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is rewarded

Jayakrishna Ambati, MD member of the Barcelona Macula Foundation’s Scientific Council, has been selected as the 2018 RPB David F. Weeks Award for Outstanding AMD Research, prestigious award founded through the generosity of the Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB) and the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology (AUPO). These two famous entities, specialised in research for the prevention of the blindness, have recognized the importance of Dr. Ambati’s research on the molecular bases of macular degeneration. Dr. Ambati will receive his award on January 25th, 2010 at the AUPO Annual Meeting in Florida.

“As an ophthalmology resident, I was struck by our inability to alter the inexorable course of blindness faced by the many AMD patients. Therefore, I resolved to dedicate my energies to tackling this problem, which affected millions of people around the globe”, Dr. Ambati have recently acknowledged.

Jayakrishna Ambati is Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Virginia and founder of the Center for Advanced Vision Science (CAVS). His scientific work focuses on identifying the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of AMD, determining the triggers of the angiogenic switch that converts this disease from an atrophic to a neovascular phenotype, and developing novel therapies to prevent and treat this blinding condition. In addition, he is the first ophthalmologist to win the Doris Duke Distinguished Scientist Award and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Clinical Scientist Award in translational research.
